Chris, Jeff, Bill, ….. and Ron

Hi Everyone – Yeah lots of people are excited about Jeff Mangum doing a track – well, me too. ‘On Avery Island’ is one of my all time faves –  the harrowing ‘Three Peaches’  and how it transitions to that great pop moment of ‘Naomi’ … remarkable, breathtaking stuff! I’m also really excited to hear Bill Callahan’s version of ‘Lapse’ – it’s gotta be beautiful, right? Tracks are rolling in daily here and it’s a wonderful thing.

We watched ‘Persepolis’ with Chris yesterday – Liesha did a magnificent job of reading out the sub-titles to Chris throughout the entire film to ensure he followed it. I’m thrilled that Chris is getting back into watching movies as I always loved hanging out & watching movies with him and he’d always have something interesting to play me.

We also sat on the back deck in the sun for a while & drank tea – it was a beautiful moment as the sun shone and John was on one side of Chris & Liesha was on the other, both taking care of him.

Chris is drawing a lot with his left hand & today responded in the affirmative when I asked if he would like some colored pens. I’m hopeful Chris will use painting as a creative outlet through his recovery.

Saying Hey! to Chris, Barb, Liesha and John. I will never forget how much hospitality all of you showed me back when I visited in 2004. Memories of that time are lovely, and sustaining for me. I went through a lot myself, with my own Pop in 2006. He had A.L.S. Chris sounds strong and patient. He will make a full recovery, I am sure of it. A loving family is such an amazing thing. My best wishes to all of you. Also, thanks so much to Roy and others for this blog….. Greg Franco.

    Hi!

I just learned about Chris’ stroke and how he’s doing and just wanted to say a very, very big “thank you, Chris” for all the wonderful music you brought us, be it he himself playing or be it any other Flying-Nun band that made it’s way to Europe! Keep the good work going, and I dearly wish you all the best!!!

Lots of love, Doc Sanchez from Germany

    Dear Chris
In a former life I was a lawyer – if fact, a corporate lawyer, so you almost certainly didn’t even hear of me. You were in music, and I heard of you in the press from time to time. Now, finally, we seem to have something in common!!

I suffered a stroke in November 2003 at the age of 58. To begin with, immediately following the stroke, my right leg and arm were virtually useless and I had not more than half a dozen words of speech left.

I have now learned to live with my leg and I no longer use a stick (albeit still with a limp, but nobodies perfect) More to the point, my language still improves every day, despite what anybody says to the contrary.Plasticity of the brain is a real gift-if one part of your brain is dead, a different part of the brain will frequently do at least some part of the same brain function instead.

I know that some days are better then others. Just take your time, and try to do it your way rather than as others would like to teach you sometimes! I know they know better than you, but do it your way anyway!!

These days I am at Algies Bay, about an hour north of you, but I also drive again, so if you want to talk to me now or at any time in the future, you only need to ask and I will do my best to be there. In the meantime, take care!

    Cheers
    Bill Reece

Too rich a life to go early, seriously man,get better for your family and friends but stuff us fans,we’re just better off musically if you still decide to play.

Our kids (3.5 year old son and 21 month old daughter) really like listening to music. When we were driving in the car over the weekend our daughter decided that she knew what she wanted to hear and started chanting “shades, shades” and then “pull down the shades” insistently from the back seat. She wouldn’t stop until we played it.

The incident gave me a small insight into what it must have been like for Chris playing gigs over the past 30 years.

Best wishes to Chris and the family.
